Imagine if you will:
You’re a soldier in Napoleon’s army. You’ve fought the British, the Prussians, conquered territory as far as eastern Europe. You’ve stood tall as musket balls scream by your head and slit throats with your bayonet.
Orders come in: we’re marching on Switzerland. Countless hours braving the harsh terrain and bitter cold, a break in the mountains reveals the first town over the boarder. At last, a village to plunder,a chance to resupply and warm up. As you come upon the center of the town, you stumble onto this scene:
Confused, you look over at your comrade. Your eyes lock as you both say, “naah.” Your entire unit then turns around and goes home.
This is the key to Swiss neutrality.
